"Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything." ~Plato
A familiar sound welcomes me as I near our campfire. Ladron sits on a log, flames dancing against his flawless skin, as he strums his lyre.
The music seems to rise like a wave from the delicate instrument. I can almost see the notes as vibrant colors swaying against the night sky.
I sit across from him, my gaze locked on his full lips as he begins to sing.
He glows with the magic he’s creating with his music, his voice ethereal and seducing.
I think of the day I woke in his presence, his music pulling me into consciousness. I should have known then that he was Hermes. It was so obvious, thinking back.
Still lost in the dance of Ladron’s music, I glance around the fire.
Mirk is nowhere to be seen, but that doesn’t mean he’s not around.
Alfio is already tucked into the furs, snoring loudly. It tugs at the memory of my dad, and rather than shove it back into a box, I let it wash over me and away. At least for now. Ladron’s music helps me do that, helps me find a healthy balance for my emotions. A middle ground between losing my shit and bottling up my shit.
Eventually, I scoot closer, and twine my arm through Ladron’s as he plays, laying my head on his shoulder. He looks down at me as he sings, directing his words—his magic—straight to me, and I absorb the spell of his breath, his voice, his melodic tenor, letting it fill me.
It’s as intimate as a kiss—more so even. It is another kind of union altogether, to feel his magic inside me.
Torak slips into camp much later, and Ladron places his lyre back into his case as we settle into sleep. Torak stays in wolf form and rests at my feet, keeping them warm with his fur. It’s my first night with all three of them, and there’s a feeling of completion as I stare at the splattering of bright stars in the sky while I listen to each of them breathing. Mirk takes the spot to my left and Ladron to my right, so with a small movement, I can touch any or all of them to assure myself they are here, with me. That I’m not alone in this bizarre Alice in Wonderland adventure.
I sleep well that night. Deeply and without dreams.
